What Linux distributions do you support?

We support the most popular Linux distributions including Ubuntu, AlmaLinux, and Debian. We provide our Linux VPS hosting with managed Linux support regardless of which distribution you choose. All of these distributions will work great with most programming language environments, so choose whichever you like most - our recommendation is Ubuntu thanks to their excellent updates and long support lifespan.

Why should I choose a VPS instead of Cloud hosting?

Cloud hosting usually has a couple of unique features that come at the cost of overall practicality, portability, and futureproofing. A cloud hosting provider might give you automated scalability, but that feature generally requires highly specialized software, which may limit your software options as time passes. Eventually you may be stuck with a deprecated system, which is inherently insecure and puts your website at risk.

A VPS (and especially a KVM VPS) allows your server to run its own kernel and operating system which can be upgraded at any time. This gives you better security and lets you run newer software with new features.

Does the number of datacenters matter?

This entirely depends on multiple factors - your use case, physical distance from the data center, your target market, and so on. If you need a VPS that is not affected by its latency and mainly requires raw performance over anything, then the data center could be located anywhere and not affect its performance. Additionally, if your target market is in the same location as the data center, that too will work just fine.

Keep in mind that regardless of where your VPS is located, you cannot serve the entire world equally well. If high network performance on a global scale is needed, then we recommend using a CDN as that allows your website's data to be present on many servers worldwide, which negates the issue of the number of datacenters.

What does KVM virtualization mean? Does your Linux VPS hosting use KVM?

KVM, or Kernel-based Virtual Machine, is full virtualization on Linux done using CPU virtualization extensions. What it means for you and for VPS hosting is that unlike competitors that use OpenVZ (or OVZ) containerization, you actually get a full virtual machine running its own kernel as your VPS. You get virtualized hardware, such as storage devices, network devices, etc.

With KVM, you get better performance, better reliability, better security and privacy, and it's impossible for another user's resource usage to affect your VPS in any way.

RoseHosting exclusively provides VPSes using KVM technology. We also do not oversell any resources, so your CPU cores are truly yours, your RAM is yours, and your storage is - you guessed it - yours.

Do you migrate services other than websites?

Yes! We'll migrate any service from your existing hosting provider as long as it is compatible with the operating system that you choose. If it is compatible with a different distribution that we offer, we'll consult with you on whether you wish to switch to that distribution instead.

If no distributions are compatible with that service, we can either try updating that software to a compatible version, or it simply won't be able to be migrated. You can ask our experts using our live chat if you're not sure or if you would like to check first.

How long does it take to migrate my services?

Migrations entirely depend on the number of services you have, the size of the services, as well as the complexity of the setup at the old provider. A basic website might take only 20 minutes to migrate, while large, complex, interconnecting services spread across multiple servers might take days or even a week to set up properly.

What's important is to note that we are flexible on scheduling migrations. We can start migrating your services immediately once we have the credentials to your old server, or we can start migrating at a specific day and time, whichever you prefer.

I want to move from a shared hosting environment to a Linux VPS. Can I do that?

If you currently use shared hosting, you can easily move to a Linux VPS. One option is to do it yourself, but the migration process can get complicated and is definitely not recommended for beginners. Your best option is to find a host that offers free website migrations and let them do it for you. You can even move from shared hosting with a control panel to a Linux VPS without a control panel.

What is the difference between 99%, 99.9%, and 100% uptime?

The higher the uptime percentage of your hosting provider, the lower the duration of possible downtime becomes. With an uptime percentage of 99%, you are looking at a possible 7 hours of downtime every month while still being within the acceptable range! That's 7 hours each month where you and your visitors can't use your website or do business with you.

An uptime SLA of 99.9% is better, however that is still over 40 minutes of acceptable downtime each month.

Our hosting ensures 100% uptime. If for whatever reason this is not achieved, we will refund you 1,000% of the hosting costs for any hours that your server was offline.

Can I upgrade my server in the future?

Yes, both upgrades and downgrades are possible. As your business grows, we are here to help your server keep up with new demand. The upgrade/downgrade takes only a few minutes to be completed, and your data is kept safe in the process. Due to our use of KVM servers, a system restart is needed to complete the upgrade process.

What does "no arbitrary limitations" mean?

Many hosting providers limit resources not because they are inherent limitations of the technology, but rather because they would prefer you upgrade to a higher plan to enable you the features or capacity that you need. A good example of this is a limit on how many websites you can run on your server, or a strict ban on email servers. This is not a limitation of their software or hardware, but rather a limit that they decided should be present.

The best vps hosts do not impose any limitations apart from the hardware resource limits that your VPS can handle. You can run as many services, software, or websites as you like without any restrictions.

Can I change my Linux distribution and software after ordering?

Your Linux VPS can be reinstalled and set up with new software whenever you like. Just let us know what you need to have done and we'll do it.

What are the benefits of managed hosting over unmanaged hosting?

A Managed server affords you the single most precious resource: time. Instead of using up your time to manage and run your server as well as your business, you can cut your responsibilities down by letting experts handle the dirty work while you run your business. We'll install, update or remove software, adjust software configurations, optimize your services, and troubleshoot and attempt to fix any problems your server has. All you need to do is ask.

Unmanaged servers don't give you that convenience, meaning you would either need to do it all yourself or hire someone externally to manage your server for you. This seems like a non-issue for many, until a situation arises that stops your website in its tracks. This can mean SEO suffers long term, customers lose faith in your brand, or even lost revenue due to technical issues for which you have to spend hours, or even days researching, until you finally give in and hire a very costly professional.

Why increase your costs and headaches, when you can simply avoid bringing yourself in such a situation?

Do I have to share a server with other users?

In most cases, yes. However, this does not mean that you will suffer from downtime or decreased performance. The benefit of a virtual server is that it can run its own operating system, and each of these systems can be administered independently of each other. A virtual private server has its own operating system, data, and applications that are separated from all the other systems, applications, and data on the physical host server and the other virtual servers.

Despite sharing the physical server with other virtual private servers, you can still enjoy the benefits of a more expensive dedicated server without spending a lot of money for the service.

What's the difference between HDD, SSD, NVMe, and PCIe 4.0 NVMe storage?

HDD - Short for Hard Disk Drive, this storage method uses spinning magnetic platters with a moving arm to read and write the data. This storage method has many moving parts, has a high data density and is prone to fail unexpectedly. Its performance is also very limited thanks to its moving parts. You can expect maximum transfer speeds of 100-200 megabytes per second or so.

SSD - Short for Solid State Drive, the name comes from the fact that this storage is in a solid state, with no moving parts. This gives much better performance than an HDD, however it is limited by its connection type, which was designed to be backwards compatible with the connector used for HDD storage. You can expect speeds of up to 500 megabytes per second (2.5-5x faster) with this storage.

NVMe - Short for Non-Volatile Memory Express, this storage type is an evolution of the SSD, which removes the biggest bottleneck - its connector. This storage now connects directly to the CPU for several times faster performance over an SSD. You can expect speeds of up to 3 gigabytes per second (6x faster) with this storage.

PCIe 4.0 NVMe - This is the same technology as the NVMe storage, however the connector technology has evolved with twice the performance out of the same connector shape. You can expect speeds of over 6 gigabytes per second (2x faster) with the PCIe 4.0 generation of NVMe. This is over 10 times the speed of a regular SSD. Our hosting uses this storage technology, so you can see just how far ahead your VPS will be from everyone else.

I have very specific install requirements. What can I install on my server?

If your software runs on Linux, it will almost 100% certainly work on our servers without issue. All NVMe VPS plans offer the choice of various full installations of the most common Linux server distributions. You can choose the one that suits your needs best, and then provide us with a complete list of what needs installed as well as any unique requests that you may have. Our support team will start working on your request immediately. If any questions or issues arise, you will be informed and any possible solutions will be suggested for you to decide on.

Which payment methods can I use?

RoseHosting accepts all Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express credit cards, as well as payments through PayPal.

After I order, how long does it take for my server to be ready?

If your invoice is paid for, your server will be provisioned immediately. You'll be able to access and start using your VPS within minutes. We recommend opening a ticket with everything you need installed as soon as you order so our experts can get started on setting everything up for you when the server is provisioned.

Do you offer a one-click application installation?

Our app installation is so easy, you don't even need to connect to your VPS to install apps! Just open a support ticket with our Support Team, tell them what app you want installed, and they do the rest! As soon as the application is installed, our team will get back to you with any login details as well as how to access the application. On top of that, we also include a one-click installation tool that lets you install over 400 applications on your server with just a single click.
