There are different ways of logging into your VPS, depending on which OS you use. You can check our post and follow the instructions for your OS, be it Windows, Mac, or Linux.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Update-your-server\"><\/span>Update your server<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>First thing you always need to do &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/blog\/update-the-software-on-linux\/\">update your server<\/a>. You can update your Ubuntu VPS with the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>apt-get update &amp;&amp; apt-get upgrade -y<\/pre>\n<p>This command will update all your system&#8217;s packages to their latest version. You should regularly update your VPS. You can set a reminder to do it, or you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/blog\/how-to-enable-automatic-updates-on-a-linux-vps\/\">set up automatic updates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Secure-your-server\"><\/span>Secure your server<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Don&#8217;t start doing anything until you <strong>properly<\/strong> configure and secure your server. We can&#8217;t stress <strong>properly<\/strong> enough. If you&#8217;re a beginner and don&#8217;t know much about Ubuntu servers or security, get a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/ubuntu-hosting.html\">Managed Ubuntu VPS<\/a> from us and our expert Linux admins will properly secure your server.<\/p>\n<h3>Enable 2FA<\/h3>\n<p>Two-Factor Authentication essentially means you&#8217;ll need a code that&#8217;s sent to your phone in order to log in to your VPS. You can follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/blog\/secure-your-ssh-using-two-factor-authentication-on-ubuntu-16-04\/\">our tutorial<\/a> and set up 2FA on your Ubuntu 16.04 VPS. Enabling 2FA will prevent other unauthorized users from logging into your server.<\/p>\n<h3>Use SSH keys<\/h3>\n<p>Another way of securing your server by preventing unwanted access is to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/blog\/ssh-login-without-password-using-ssh-keys\/\">use SSH keys<\/a>. This will prevent anyone from logging into your server without a unique combination of a private and public key, which you must add to your server.<\/p>\n<h3>Use a strong password<\/h3>\n<p>Everywhere. Not just your server. Use a strong password in the client area, use a strong password in your CMS, use a strong password in your database. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/blog\/generate-password-linux-command-line\/\">generate a password from the command line<\/a> too. It is recommended that you use different passwords for each login\/service.<\/p>\n<p>The combination of a strong password along with SSH keys and 2FA ensures maximum security when it comes to unauthorized access to your VPS.<\/p>\n<h3>Change the default SSH port<\/h3>\n<p>The default SSH port is 22, so you should <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/blog\/change-default-ssh-port-on-linux\/\">change it<\/a> as that&#8217;s the most common port that gets attacked. Although it&#8217;s relatively easy to &#8220;sniff out&#8221; the port your server is using, you should still not use the default one as it can prevent some attacks. It will only take a few minutes and it may save you days worth of work from the attacks you&#8217;ll receive if you continue using the default port.<\/p>\n<h3>Set up a firewall<\/h3>\n<p>One of the security tweaks you can do on your server is to set up a firewall. There are several ways of doing it &#8211; a couple of them are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/blog\/how-to-set-up-a-firewall-with-iptables-on-ubuntu-and-centos\/\">using iptables<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/blog\/set-up-firewall-with-ufw-on-ubuntu\/\">using UFW<\/a>. Follow the appropriate tutorial and configure your firewall. Make sure to closely follow the tutorial, because you can block yourself out of your server or misconfigure the firewall and block all traffic to your websites. Make sure you know what you&#8217;re doing, or, again, get a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/managed-vps-hosting.html\">Managed VPS<\/a> and let professionals do it for you.<\/p>\n<p>You can also use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/blog\/install-fail2ban-on-an-ubuntu-14-04\/\">fail2ban<\/a> to prevent brute-force attacks on your SSH, HTTP, FTP, SMTP etc.<\/p>\n<p>Using a LEMP (Linux, Nginx, MySQL, PHP) stack? Having an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/ssl-certificates.html\">SSL certificate<\/a> on your website is even considered a <a href=\"https:\/\/webmasters.googleblog.com\/2014\/08\/https-as-ranking-signal.html\">ranking factor by Google<\/a>, so you&#8217;ll improve your search engine visibility, as well as your security. By using SSL, you&#8217;ll also increase your user&#8217;s trust factor.<\/p>\n<p><em>Don&#8217;t forget to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/blog\/how-to-redirect-http-traffic-to-https-in-nginx-and-apache\/\">redirect all traffic from HTTP to HTTPS<\/a> after you install your SSL.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Backup-your-server\"><\/span>Backup your server<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s always smart, recommended, and essential to have backups. You never know when and what could go wrong, and a backup will <em>really<\/em> come in handy if something does go wrong. However, if you can and know how to manage your server without a control panel, it&#8217;s recommended not to use one, as it will just cause unnecessary load on your server.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Set-up-a-mail-server\"><\/span>Set up a mail server<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Be careful, though!
