we will be using <code> git.rosehostingtest.com <\/code> as an example.<\/li>\n<li>Full root access<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can learn more about the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.gitlab.com\/ce\/install\/requirements.html\">server requirements<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Install-Updates-and-Dependencies\"><\/span>Install Updates and Dependencies<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Log in to your server via SSH:<\/p>\n<pre>ssh username@server_ip<\/pre>\n<p>Before starting with the GitLab installation, it is a good idea to update the system packages to their latest versions.<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt-get update\r\nsudo apt-get upgrade<\/pre>\n<p>Ensure that the required dependencies are installed by running the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt-get install curl openssh-server ca-certificates postfix software-properties-common -y<\/pre>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Installing-Lets-Encrypt-SSL-and-Configuring-a-DHPARAM-Certificate\"><\/span>Installing Let&#8217;s Encrypt SSL and Configuring a DHPARAM\u00a0Certificate<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It is best to use GitLab through HTTPS as this will make the connection to important project files secure.<\/p>\n<p>To begin, install the required packages from Certbot &#8211; a program that automates SSL\/TLS certificate installation using Let&#8217;s Encrypt Free SSL:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository universe\r\nsudo add-apt-repository ppa:certbot\/certbot\r\nsudo apt-get update\r\nsudo apt-get install certbot \r\n<\/pre>\n<p>Next is to generate an SSL certificate for our domain. First, we make sure that port 80 will not be in use by Apache:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo systemctl stop apache2\r\nsudo systemctl disable apache2<\/pre>\n<p>After that, we can now proceed to generate Let&#8217;s Encrypt SSL certificates for our domain:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo certbot certonly --standalone -d git.rosehostingtest.com<\/pre>\n<p>If the process is a success, you should see the following message:<\/p>\n<pre>Congratulations! Your certificate and chain have been saved at:\r\n\/etc\/letsencrypt\/live\/git.rosehostingtest.com\/fullchain.pem\r\nYour key file has been saved at:\r\n\/etc\/letsencrypt\/live\/git.rosehostingtest.com\/privkey.pem\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>To generate the DHPARAM certificate, use the following commands:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo mkdir -p \/etc\/gitlab\/ssl\/\r\nsudo openssl dhparam -out \/etc\/gitlab\/ssl\/dhparams.pem 4096\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>It is required to change the file permissions of the certificate.<\/p>\n<pre>sudo chmod 600 \/etc\/gitlab\/ssl\/dhparams.pem<\/pre>\n<p>Now that we have generated an SSL and DHPARAM certificate for our domain, we can now proceed with installing GitLab.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Installing-GitLab-Community-Edition-CE\"><\/span>Installing GitLab Community Edition (CE)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There are two self-hosted editions for GitLab &#8211; GitLab CE (Community Edition) and GiLlab EE (Enterprise Edition). The Community Edition is free to use, while the Enterprise Edition is paid &#8211; it comes with additional features. In this tutorial, we will install the Community Edition.<\/p>\n<p>Add the GitLab repository:<\/p>\n<pre>curl -sS https:\/\/packages.gitlab.com\/install\/repositories\/gitlab\/gitlab-ce\/script.deb.sh | sudo bash<\/pre>\n<p>After adding the repository, we can now proceed to download the\u00a0GitLab CE package:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install gitlab-ce -y<\/pre>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Configuring-GitLab\"><\/span>Configuring GitLab<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>After a successful installation, we will need to configure our URL to be used by our application.<\/p>\n<pre>sudo nano \/etc\/gitlab\/gitlab.rb<\/pre>\n<p>Now modify the &#8220;external_url&#8221; variable to utilize your domain.<\/p>\n<pre>external_url 'https:\/\/git.rosehostingtest.com'<\/pre>\n<p>After that, we will need to set up security measures for our GitLab Server. Paste the following under the &#8220;#GitLab Nginx&#8221; section to override some settings.<\/p>\n<pre>nginx['redirect_http_to_https'] = true\r\nnginx['ssl_certificate'] = \"\/etc\/letsencrypt\/live\/git.rosehostingtest.com\/fullchain.pem\"\r\nnginx['ssl_certificate_key'] = \"\/etc\/letsencrypt\/live\/git.rosehostingtest.com\/privkey.pem\"\r\nnginx['ssl_dhparam'] = \"\/etc\/gitlab\/ssl\/dhparams.pem\"<\/pre>\n<p>We are then required to run a command to reconfigure GitLab settings:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo gitlab-ctl reconfigure<\/pre>\n<p>If the reconfiguration is a success, you should see the following message:<\/p>\n<pre>gitlab Reconfigured!<\/pre>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Setting-up-a-Firewall\"><\/span>Setting up a Firewall<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Ubuntu&#8217;s built-in firewall must be configured to allow three protocols: SSH, HTTP, and HTTPS.<\/p>\n<p>To allow the three protocols, execute the following:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo ufw allow ssh\r\nsudo ufw allow http\r\nsudo ufw allow https<\/pre>\n<p>To verify the firewall settings:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo ufw status<\/pre>\n<p>Enable the new settings:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo ufw enable<\/pre>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Post-Installation-GitLab-Steps\"><\/span>Post-Installation GitLab Steps<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>After successfully installing GitLab, you can now visit your GitLab application by visiting your domain name in a web browser. At first, it will prompt for a password change.<\/p>\n<p>To log in, supply the following credentials:<\/p>\n<p>Username: <code> root <\/code><\/p>\n<p>Password: <code> &lt;the password you set&gt; <\/code><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Managing-the-GitLab-Service\"><\/span>Managing the GitLab Service<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To start GitLab:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo gitlab-ctl start<\/pre>\n<p>To stop GitLab:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo gitlab-ctl stop<\/pre>\n<p>To restart GitLab:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo gitlab-ctl restart<\/pre>\n<p>To start, stop, or restart an individual component:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo gitlab-ctl &lt;start, stop, restart&gt; &lt;component&gt;\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>That&#8217;s it!
