Update the Server OS Packages<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>First, log in to your Ubuntu 20.04 server via SSH as the root user:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">ssh root@IP_Address -p Port_number<\/pre>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>You will need to replace \u2018IP_Address\u2018 and \u2018Port_number\u2018 with your server\u2019s respective IP address and SSH port number. Additionally, replace \u2018root\u2019 with the username of the admin account if necessary.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Before starting, you have to make sure that all Ubuntu OS packages installed on the server are up to date. You can do this by running the following commands:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">apt-get update -y\r\napt-get upgrade -y<\/pre>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-2-install-and-configure-mariadb\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step-2-Install-and-Configure-MariaDB\"><\/span>Step 2: Install and Configure MariaDB<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Mattermost uses MariaDB\/MySQL as a database backend. So you will need to install the MariaDB server on your server. You can install it by just running the following command:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">apt-get install mariadb-server<\/pre>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>After installing the MariaDB server, log in to the MariaDB shell with the following command:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">mysql<\/pre>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Once login, create a database and user for Mattermost:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">MariaDB [(none)]&gt; CREATE DATABASE mattermostdb;\r\nMariaDB [(none)]&gt; CREATE USER 'mattermost'@'%' IDENTIFIED BY 'securepassword';<\/pre>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Next, grant all the privileges to the Mattermost database with the following command:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">MariaDB [(none)]&gt; GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON mattermostdb.* TO 'mattermost'@'%';<\/pre>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Next, flush the privileges and exit from the MariaDB shell with the following command:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">MariaDB [(none)]&gt; FLUSH PRIVILEGES;\r\nMariaDB [(none)]&gt; EXIT;<\/pre>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Now, the MariaDB database is installed and configured for Mattermost.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-3-install-and-setup-mattermost\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step-3-Install-and-Setup-Mattermost\"><\/span>Step 3 : Install and Setup Mattermost<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>First, create a separate user and group to run Mattermost.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">useradd --system --user-group mattermost<\/pre>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Next, download the latest version of Mattermost with the following command:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">wget https:\/\/releases.mattermost.com\/5.28.1\/mattermost-5.28.1-linux-amd64.tar.gz<\/pre>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Once the download is completed, extract the downloaded file with the following command:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">tar -xvzf mattermost-5.28.1-linux-amd64.tar.gz<\/pre>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Next, move the extracted directory to the \/opt with the following command:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">mv mattermost \/opt\/\r\nmkdir \/opt\/mattermost\/data<\/pre>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Next, change the ownership and permissions of the Mattermost:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">chown -R mattermost:mattermost \/opt\/mattermost\r\nchmod -R g+w \/opt\/mattermost<\/pre>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Next, edit the Mattermost configuration file and define your site URL and database settings:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">nano \/opt\/mattermost\/config\/config.json<\/pre>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Change the following lines with your site domain name and database settings:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">\"SiteURL\": \"<code>http:\/\/mattermost.example.com<\/code>\", \"DriverName\": \"mysql\", \"DataSource\": \"mattermost:securepassword@tcp(localhost:3306)\/mattermostdb?charset=utf8mb4,utf8\\u0026readTimeout=30s\\u0026writeTimeout=30s\",<\/pre>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Save and close the file when you are done.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-4-create-a-systemd-service-file-for-mattermost\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step-4-Create-a-Systemd-Service-File-for-Mattermost\"><\/span>Step 4: Create a Systemd Service File for Mattermost<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Next, create a systemd service file to start and stop the Mattermost service.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">nano \/lib\/systemd\/system\/mattermost.service<\/pre>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Add the following lines:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">[Unit]\r\nDescription=Mattermost\r\nAfter=network.target\r\nAfter=mysql.service\r\nRequires=mysql.service\r\n\r\n[Service]\r\nType=notify\r\nUser=mattermost\r\nGroup=mattermost\r\nExecStart=\/opt\/mattermost\/bin\/mattermost\r\nTimeoutStartSec=3600\r\nRestart=always\r\nRestartSec=10\r\nWorkingDirectory=\/opt\/mattermost\r\nLimitNOFILE=49152\r\n\r\n[Install]\r\nWantedBy=mariadb.service\r\n<\/pre>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Save and close the file then reload the systemd daemon to apply the configuration changes:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">systemctl daemon-reload<\/pre>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Next, start the Mattermost service and enable it to start at system reboot:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">systemctl start mattermost\r\nsystemctl enable mattermost<\/pre>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>At this point, Mattermost is started and listening on port 8065.
