If you want to use your regular system user with sudo privileges to run the commands, make sure to append \u2018sudo\u2019 in front of the commands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step-2-Install-Dependencies\"><\/span>Step 2. Install Dependencies<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before proceeding to the next step, we need to install the dependencies required by Jira. Let&#8217;s install them from the default Ubuntu repository.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\"># apt install fontconfig wget<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s continue to the next step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step-3-Install-MySQL-Server-and-Create-a-Database\"><\/span>Step 3. Install MySQL Server and Create a Database<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Jira supports several database engine. In this step, we are going to install MySQL 8.0 from the default Ubuntu repository.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\"># apt install mysql-server -y<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Once installed, MySQL server will be up and running. Let&#8217;s log in to MySQL shell and create a database.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\"># mysql<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">mysql&gt; CREATE DATABASE jiradb;<br>mysql&gt; CREATE USER jira@localhost IDENTIFIED BY 'm0d1fyth15';<br>mysql&gt; GRANT ALL ON jiradb.* TO jira@localhost WITH GRANT OPTION;<br>mysql&gt; FLUSH PRIVILEGES;<br>mysql&gt; \\q<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure to replace <strong>m0d1fyth15<\/strong> with a stronger password. You should also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosehosting.com\/blog\/how-to-install-and-use-mysql-on-ubuntu-20-04\/\">set a root password on MySQL<\/a> for better security. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step-4-Install-Jira\"><\/span>Step 4. Install Jira<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In this step, we are going to install Jira software using the Linux installer. We need to go to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlassian.com\/software\/jira\/update\" rel=\"nofollow\">https:\/\/www.atlassian.com\/software\/jira\/update<\/a> then download it, choose Linux in the operating system dropdown list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time of writing this article, Jira version 9.11.1 was the latest version available to download, so let&#8217;s download it now. You can change the link to a later version if there is one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\"># wget https:\/\/www.atlassian.com\/software\/jira\/downloads\/binary\/atlassian-jira-software-9.11.1-x64.bin -O atlassian-jira-software.bin<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, let&#8217;s give it the appropriate permissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\"># chmod +x atlassian-jira-software.bin<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, run the installer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">.\/atlassian-jira-software.bin<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>You will be prompted for some questions, make sure to choose &#8220;Custom Install&#8221; when asked and hit ENTER for all other questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The installer should return with the following output.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">This will install Jira Software 9.11.1 on your computer.\nOK [o, Enter], Cancel [c]\n\nClick Next to continue, or Cancel to exit Setup.\n\nChoose the appropriate installation or upgrade option.\nPlease choose one of the following:\nExpress Install (use default settings) [1], Custom Install (recommended for advanced users) [2, Enter], Upgrade an existing Jira installation [3]\n2\n\nSelect the folder where you would like Jira Software to be installed.\nWhere should Jira Software be installed?\n[\/opt\/atlassian\/jira]\n\n\nDefault location for Jira Software data\n[\/var\/atlassian\/application-data\/jira]\n\n\nConfigure which ports Jira Software will use.\nJira requires two TCP ports that are not being used by any other\napplications on this machine. The HTTP port is where you will access Jira\nthrough your browser. The Control port is used to startup and shutdown Jira.\nUse default ports (HTTP: 8080, Control: 8005) - Recommended [1, Enter], Set custom value for HTTP and Control ports [2]\n\nJira can be run in the background.\nYou may choose to run Jira as a service, which means it will start\nautomatically whenever the computer restarts.\nInstall Jira as Service?\nYes [y, Enter], No [n]\n\n\nDetails on where Jira Software will be installed and the settings that will be used.\nInstallation Directory: \/opt\/atlassian\/jira \nHome Directory: \/var\/atlassian\/application-data\/jira \nHTTP Port: 8080 \nRMI Port: 8005 \nInstall as service: Yes \nInstall [i, Enter], Exit [e]<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>At this point, the installation is being started, and once completed, you will see a message like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">Please wait a few moments while Jira Software is configured.\n\nInstallation of Jira Software 9.11.1 is complete\nStart Jira Software 9.11.1 now?\nYes [y, Enter], No [n]\n\nPress ENTER to proceed, Jira software should be up and running in a moment.\n\nPlease wait a few moments while Jira Software starts up.\nLaunching Jira Software ...\n\nInstallation of Jira Software 9.11.1 is complete\nYour installation of Jira Software 9.11.1 is now ready and can be accessed\nvia your browser.\nJira Software 9.11.1 can be accessed at http:\/\/localhost:8080\nFinishing installation ...<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s it, Jira has been installed and it is now accessible on port 8080.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step-5-Install-MySQL-Connector\"><\/span>Step 5. Install MySQL Connector<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In this tutorial, we are going to use MySQL as the database engine. Let&#8217;s download MySQL Java connector to connect Java to the database server.
