Update the Server OS Packages<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>First, log in to your Ubuntu 20.04 server via SSH as the root user:<\/p>\n<pre>ssh root@IP_Address -p Port_number<\/pre>\n<p>You will need to replace \u2018<strong>IP_Address<\/strong>\u2018 and <strong>\u2018Port_number<\/strong>\u2018 with your server\u2019s respective IP address and SSH port number. Additionally, replace \u2018root\u2019 with the username of the admin account if necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Before starting, you have to make sure that all Ubuntu OS packages installed on the server are up to date. You can do this by running the following commands:<\/p>\n<pre>apt-get update\r\napt-get upgrade<\/pre>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Install-OpenJDK-17-from-Ubuntu-2004-Repository\"><\/span>Install OpenJDK 17 from Ubuntu 20.04 Repository<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Ubuntu 20.04\u2019s default repository included Java 17. This is the easiest way to install the JDK using the <code>apt<\/code> package manager:<\/p>\n<pre>apt install openjdk-17-jdk openjdk-17-jre<\/pre>\n<p>Once installed, verify the Java version using the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>java -version<\/pre>\n<p>You should get the following output:<\/p>\n<pre>openjdk 17.0.2 2022-01-18\r\nOpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 17.0.2+8-Ubuntu-120.04)\r\nOpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 17.0.2+8-Ubuntu-120.04, mixed mode, sharing<\/pre>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Install-Oracle-JDK-17-on-Ubuntu-2004-%E2%80%93-APT-PPA-Method\"><\/span>Install Oracle JDK 17 on Ubuntu 20.04 \u2013 APT PPA Method<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>By default, Oracle Java is not available in the Ubuntu 20.04 default repository. You will need to add the third-party repository in your system in order to install Oracle Java.<\/p>\n<p>First, install the required dependencies with the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>apt-get install gnupg2 software-properties-common<\/pre>\n<p>Once all the dependencies are installed, add the Java repository with the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>add-apt-repository ppa:linuxuprising\/java<\/pre>\n<p>When the repository is added, you can install it with the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>apt-get install oracle-java17-installer oracle-java17-set-default<\/pre>\n<p>You will see this installer window where you are supposed to agree to the License Terms.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-41185 id=\"Install-Oracle-JDK-17-on-Ubuntu-2004-%E2%80%93-DPKG-Method\"><\/span>Install Oracle JDK 17 on Ubuntu 20.04 \u2013 DPKG Method<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>First, install the required dependencies using the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>apt install libc6-i386 libc6-x32 libxi6 libxtst6<\/pre>\n<p>After installing all the required dependencies, you can download the <strong>.deb package<\/strong> using a <code>wget<\/code> command:<\/p>\n<pre>wget https:\/\/download.oracle.com\/java\/17\/latest\/jdk-17_linux-x64_bin.deb<\/pre>\n<p>Once you have downloaded the <strong>.deb package<\/strong>, run the following command to install Java:<\/p>\n<pre> dpkg -i jdk-17_linux-x64_bin.deb<\/pre>\n<p>Set environment variables using these commands below:<\/p>\n<pre>export JAVA_HOME=\/usr\/lib\/jvm\/jdk-17\/\r\nexport PATH=$PATH:$JAVA_HOME\/bin<\/pre>\n<p>Next, set your Java\u00a0 environment path in the <strong>\/etc\/environment<\/strong> file:<\/p>\n<pre>nano \/etc\/environment<\/pre>\n<p>Add the following line:<\/p>\n<pre>JAVA_HOME=\"\/usr\/lib\/jvm\/jdk-17\"\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>Next, activate the Java environment variable with the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>source \/etc\/environment<\/pre>\n<p>You can now verify the JAVA_HOME environment variable with the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>echo $JAVA_HOME<\/pre>\n<p>You should get the following output:<\/p>\n<pre>\/usr\/lib\/jvm\/jdk-17\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>You can now verify the version of Java using the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>java Oracle download page.
