Create MariaDB database for Mahara<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Next, we need to create a database for our Mahara installation.<\/p>\n<pre>[user]$ mysql -u root -p\r\n\r\nMariaDB [(none)]&gt; CREATE DATABASE mahara character set UTF8;\r\nMariaDB [(none)]&gt; GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON mahara.* TO 'maharauser'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'your-password';\r\nMariaDB [(none)]&gt; FLUSH PRIVILEGES;\r\nMariaDB [(none)]&gt; \\q<\/pre>\n<p>Do not forget to replace \u2018your-password\u2019 with a strong password.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5-Install-Apache2-Web-Server\"><\/span>5. Download and extract Mahara<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Download and extract the latest version of Mahara on your server:<\/p>\n<pre>[user]$ sudo cd \/opt &amp;&amp; wget https:\/\/launchpad.net\/mahara\/16.04\/16.04.1\/+download\/mahara-16.04.1.zip\r\n[user]$ sudo unzip mahara-16.04.1.zip\r\n[user]$ sudo mv mahara-16.04.1 \/var\/www\/html\/mahara<\/pre>\n<p>Create Mahara&#8217;s upload directory<\/p>\n<pre>[user]$ sudo mkdir \/var\/www\/html\/mahara\/upload\/<\/pre>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"8-Configure-Mahara\"><\/span>8. Configure Mahara<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Create Mahara&#8217;s config.php<\/p>\n<p>In the Mahara &#8216;htdocs&#8217; directory there is config-dist.php file. Make a copy of this called config.php.<\/p>\n<pre>[user]$ cd \/var\/www\/html\/mahara\/htdocs\/\r\n[user]$ sudo cp config-dist.php config.php<\/pre>\n<p>Open the config.php and make the necessary changes where appropriate.<\/p>\n<pre>[user]$ sudo nano config.php\r\n\r\n$cfg-&gt;dbtype   = 'mysql';\r\n$cfg-&gt;dbhost   = 'localhost';\r\n$cfg-&gt;dbport   = null;\r\n$cfg-&gt;dbname   = 'mahara';\r\n$cfg-&gt;dbuser   = 'maharauser';\r\n$cfg-&gt;dbpass   = 'your-password';\r\n$cfg-&gt;dataroot = '\/var\/www\/html\/mahara\/upload\/';<\/pre>\n<p>All files have to be readable by the web server, so we need to set a proper ownership<\/p>\n<pre>[user]$ sudo chown www-data:www-data -R \/var\/www\/html\/mahara\/<\/pre>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"9-Configure-Apache-Web-Server\"><\/span>9. Configure Apache Web Server<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Create a new virtual host directive in Apache. For example, create a new Apache configuration file named \u2018mahara.conf\u2019 on your virtual server:<\/p>\n<pre>[user]$ sudo touch \/etc\/apache2\/sites-available\/mahara.conf\r\n[user]$ sudo ln -s \/etc\/apache2\/sites-available\/mahara.conf \/etc\/apache2\/sites-enabled\/mahara.conf\r\n[user]$ sudo nano \/etc\/apache2\/sites-available\/mahara.conf<\/pre>\n<p>Then, add the following lines:<\/p>\n<pre>&lt;VirtualHost *:80&gt;\r\nServerAdmin admin@yourdomain.com\r\nDocumentRoot \/var\/www\/html\/mahara\/htdocs\/\r\nServerName your-domain.com\r\nServerAlias www.your-domain.com\r\n&lt;Directory \/var\/www\/html\/mahara\/htdocs\/&gt;\r\nOptions FollowSymLinks\r\nAllowOverride All\r\nOrder allow,deny\r\nallow from all\r\n&lt;\/Directory&gt;\r\nErrorLog \/var\/log\/apache2\/your-domain.com-error_log\r\nCustomLog \/var\/log\/apache2\/your-domain.com-access_log common\r\n&lt;\/VirtualHost&gt;\r\n<\/pre>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"10-Restart-and-Verify\"><\/span>10. Restart and Verify<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Restart the Apache web server for the changes to take effect:<\/p>\n<pre>[user]$ sudo service apache2 restart<\/pre>\n<p>Open your favorite web browser, navigate to http:\/\/your-domain.com\/ and if you configured everything correctly the Mahara installer should be starting. You should follow the easy instructions on the install screen inserting the necessary information as requested.<\/p>\n<p>That is it.
