What&#8217;s yours?<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Prerequisites\"><\/span>Prerequisites:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Make sure that your server meets the following minimum requirements:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A VPS with Ubuntu 18.04 running on it (preferably a fresh installation)<\/li>\n<li>A user account with root access, or access to the &#8220;root&#8221; user<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Install-Updates-and-Fix-Dependencies\"><\/span>Install Updates and Fix Dependencies<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Log in to your server via SSH:<\/p>\n<pre>ssh username@server_ip<\/pre>\n<p>Remember to replace &#8220;username&#8221; with the username which you wish to use on the server, as well as replacing &#8220;server_ip&#8221; with your server&#8217;s IP address.<\/p>\n<p>Before starting with the GlassFish Server installation, it is a good idea to update the system packages to their latest versions, if any are available:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt-get update\r\nsudo apt-get upgrade<\/pre>\n<p>Install software package dependencies needed by GlassFish by running the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt-get install software-properties-common wget unzip<\/pre>\n<h3>Installing and Configuring Java 8<\/h3>\n<p>Since GlassFish is powered by Java, it must be installed and configured on your Ubuntu server first. As of\u00a0writing, GlassFish 5.0 only supports Java 8.<\/p>\n<p>This command will install Oracle JDK 8 using the PPA repository:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team\/java\r\nsudo apt-get update\r\nsudo apt-get install oracle-java8-installer<\/pre>\n<p>After the installation, you can check the active Java version using this command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo java -version<\/pre>\n<p>You should see the following message:<\/p>\n<pre>java version \"1.8.0_191\"\r\nJava(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_191-b12)\r\nJava HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.191-b12, mixed mode)<\/pre>\n<h3>Updating the Java Environment Variable<\/h3>\n<p>Most Java applications use the variable <code>JAVA_HOME<\/code> in determining the location of your Java installation.<\/p>\n<p>To check if you already have <code>JAVA_HOME<\/code> set, type the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>echo $JAVA_HOME<\/pre>\n<p>If you see a blank line, it means there is no configured <code>JAVA_HOME<\/code> variable. If there is, you can double check if it is using the correct path by following these next steps.<\/p>\n<p>To determine the current Java location, use the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo update-alternatives --config java<\/pre>\n<p>The output should show you the Java installation path, like the following:<br \/>\n<code>\/usr\/lib\/jvm\/java-8-oracle\/jre\/bin\/java<\/code><\/p>\n<p>Now we need to append the Java location to our environment file. Modify the path accordingly based on your Java path:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo echo JAVA_HOME=\\\"\/usr\/lib\/jvm\/java-8-oracle\/bin\/java\\\" &gt;&gt; \/etc\/environment<\/pre>\n<p>After that, we will need to source the file to update our shell:<\/p>\n<pre>source \/etc\/environment<\/pre>\n<p>Now you can verify if <code>JAVA_HOME<\/code> is set by using either of\u00a0the following\u00a0commands:<\/p>\n<pre>echo $JAVA_HOME\r\n$JAVA_HOME -version<\/pre>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Installing-the-Latest-GlassFish-Server\"><\/span>Installing the Latest GlassFish Server<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>At the time of writing, the current latest version of GlassFish Server is 5.0.1.<\/p>\n<p>First, we need to change our current directory to \/opt:<\/p>\n<pre>cd \/opt<\/pre>\n<p>We can now download the latest nightly build version of GlassFish from their official <a href=\"https:\/\/javaee.github.io\/glassfish\/download\">GlassFish website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<pre>sudo wget http:\/\/download.oracle.com\/glassfish\/5.0.1\/nightly\/latest-glassfish.zip<\/pre>\n<p>Extract the files to the current directory. You can choose a different directory if you wish to keep your installation of GlassFish elsewhere.<\/p>\n<pre>sudo unzip latest-glassfish.zip<\/pre>\n<p>To extract to a specific directory:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo unzip latest-glassfish.zip -d \/path\/to\/desired\/directory<\/pre>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Setting-Up-GlassFish-Service\"><\/span>Setting Up GlassFish Service<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Create the service file:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo nano \/etc\/systemd\/system\/glassfish.service<\/pre>\n<p>Copy and paste the following. Modify the GlassFish path in respect to the directory of your GlassFish install:<br \/>\n<code>[Unit]<br \/>\nDescription = GlassFish Server v5.0<br \/>\nAfter = syslog.target network.target<\/code><\/p>\n<p><code>[Service]<br \/>\nExecStart=\/opt\/glassfish5\/bin\/asadmin start-domain<br \/>\nExecReload=\/opt\/glassfish5\/bin\/asadmin restart-domain<br \/>\nExecStop=\/opt\/glassfish5\/bin\/asadmin stop-domain<br \/>\nType = forking<\/code><\/p>\n<p><code>[Install]<br \/>\nWantedBy = multi-user.target<\/code><\/p>\n<p>Save and exit. Now we need to reload system services:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo systemctl daemon-reload<\/pre>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Managing-the-GlassFish-Service\"><\/span>Managing the GlassFish Service<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To enable GlassFish at boot:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo\u00a0systemctl\u00a0enable glassfish<\/pre>\n<p>To start GlassFish:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo\u00a0systemctl start glassfish<\/pre>\n<p>Check the service status using this command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo\u00a0systemctl status glassfish<\/pre>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Accessing-GlassFish\"><\/span>Accessing GlassFish<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Once GlassFish has started, you can now access the default page on port 8080.<br \/>\n<code>http:\/\/&lt;server-ip-address&gt;:8080<\/code><\/p>\n<p>You can access the web administrator console on port 4848.<\/p>\n<p><code>http:\/\/&lt;server-ip-address&gt;:4848<\/code><\/p>\n<p>Remember to replace &#8220;server-ip-address&#8221; with your server&#8217;s IP address.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Setting-Up-the-GlassFish-Path\"><\/span>Setting Up the GlassFish Path<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>GlassFish has a utility called <code>asadmin<\/code> which accepts commands for setting up GlassFish via a command line. To run the\u00a0<code>asadmin<\/code> executable anywhere, execute the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>export PATH=\/opt\/glassfish5\/bin:$PATH<\/pre>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Securing-the-GlassFish-Admin-Console\"><\/span>Securing the GlassFish Admin Console<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The default admin password is blank. To update the admin password, run the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>asadmin change-admin-password<\/pre>\n<p><code>Enter admin user name [default: admin]&gt;admin<br \/>\nEnter the admin password&gt; &lt;blank&gt;<br \/>\nEnter the new admin password&gt;<br \/>\nEnter the new admin password again&gt;<br \/>\nCommand change-admin-password executed successfully.<\/code><\/p>\n<p>After changing the admin password, we now need to enable the &#8220;secure admin&#8221; feature. It will ask for the credentials we added earlier.<\/p>\n<pre>asadmin enable-secure-admin<\/pre>\n<p>We must restart GlassFish for the changes to take effect:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo systemctl\u00a0restart glassfish<\/pre>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Testing-GlassFish\"><\/span>Testing GlassFish<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Now that we have a GlassFish Server that uses secure admin access, we can now test the server by deploying a sample WAR file.<\/p>\n<p>First, we need to download a sample WAR file on domain1&#8217;s document root directory:<\/p>\n<pre>cd \/opt\/glassfish5\/glassfish\/domains\/domain1\/docroot\/\u00a0\r\nsudo wget https:\/\/github.com\/dmatej\/Glassfish\/raw\/master\/v2\/www\/downloads\/quickstart\/hello.war<\/pre>\n<p>To deploy, run the following command. It will ask for admin credentials:<\/p>\n<pre>asadmin deploy hello.war<\/pre>\n<p>After successfully deploying, navigate to:<br \/>\n<code>http:\/\/&lt;server-ip-address&gt;:8080\/hello<\/code><\/p>\n<p>You should see the following message:<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hi-my-name-is-Duke-Whats-yours\"><\/span>Hi, my name is Duke. What&#8217;s yours?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>And that&#8217;s it!
