Update OS Packages<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>and update all installed packages to the latest version<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">apt-get update &amp;&amp; apt-get upgrade<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-check-maven-version\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3-Check-Maven-Version\"><\/span>3. Check Maven Version<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The installation of Apache Maven is a very simple process. It is available in the official Ubuntu 16.04 repository. You can check the exact version by executing the following command<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">apt-cache show maven | grep Version\nVersion: 3.3.9-3<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-install-maven-from-the-official-repository\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4-Install-Maven-from-the-official-repository\"><\/span>4. Install Maven from the official repository<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So currently installed is version 3.3.9. Note that the latest available version of Apache Maven is currently 3.5.2 and it is the recommended version for all users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To proceed with the installation, run the following command<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">apt-get -y install maven<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>This will install the latest Maven 3 version available in the repository along with all Maven dependencies, including Java.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the installation is complete, you can verify whether Maven is successfully installed on your Ubuntu 16.04 server, use the following command<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">mvn --version<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>The result should be similar to<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">Apache Maven 3.3.9\nMaven home: \/usr\/share\/maven\nJava version: 1.8.0_151, vendor: Oracle Corporation\nJava home: \/usr\/lib\/jvm\/java-8-openjdk-amd64\/jre\nDefault locale: en_US, platform encoding: ANSI_X3.4-1968\nOS name: \"linux\", version: \"2.6.32-042stab127.2\", arch: \"amd64\", family: \"unix\"<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-manual-installation-of-maven\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5-Manual-Installation-of-Maven\"><\/span>5. Manual Installation of Maven<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As we already mentioned, 3.3.9 is not the latest version of Maven. If you want to install the latest one, you can download it from Maven&#8217;s official website. First of all, we have to install Java on the server. It is not available in the official Ubuntu 16.04 repository, so we will add the PPA repository maintained by the Webupd8 team<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">apt-get install software-properties-common\napt-add-repository ppa:webupd8team\/java\napt-get update<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-install-java\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6-Install-Java\"><\/span>6. Install Java<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, install Java 8 with the following command<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">apt-get install oracle-java8-installer<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>To verify the installation, run<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">java -version\n\njava version \"1.8.0_121\"\nJava(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_121-b13)\nJava HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.121-b13, mixed mode)<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-download-latest-maven-version\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7-Download-Latest-Maven-Version\"><\/span>7. Download Latest Maven Version<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Download the latest stable release Maven<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">wget http:\/\/ftp.wayne.edu\/apache\/maven\/maven-3\/3.5.2\/binaries\/apache-maven-3.5.2-bin.zip<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Once downloaded, unpack the zip archive<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">unzip apache-maven-3.5.2-bin.zip<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-8-configure-maven\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"8-Configure-Maven\"><\/span>8. Configure Maven<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>rename the create directory to something simpler<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">mv apache-maven-3.5.2 maven<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Set the necessary environment variables by creating new file with the following content<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">nano \/etc\/profile.d\/maven.sh\n\nexport JAVA_HOME=\/usr\/lib\/jvm\/java-8-oracle\nexport M2_HOME=\/opt\/maven\nexport MAVEN_HOME=\/opt\/maven\nexport PATH=${M2_HOME}\/bin:${PATH}<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure that all paths are correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Run the following command to load the environment variables<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">source \/etc\/profile.d\/maven.sh<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-9-verify-maven-installation-on-ubuntu-16-04\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"9-Verify-Maven-Installation-on-Ubuntu-1604\"><\/span>9.
